“Holy crap on a cracker Batman…a BLACK HERMIONE!!” Some people would say that’s real witchcraft right there. How dare the powers that be deem a black woman suitable to be the illustrious Hermione!!! People are outraged, offended, and angry…I think they are pissed off even more than the black Storm Trooper. What is this World coming to where black people think they can infiltrate mainstream “white” media and not have to shuck and jive? My main guess is shucking and jiving is sold separately.
Just once…for a few seconds…let’s really talk about why her skin color matters at all? It is hilarious to me, that of all things to get upset about, the skin color of a fictional character is enough to set the World on edge.
Remember when Rue from the Hunger Games was cast (never mind the fact that she died…it’s not like she was a major component…and by the way…why do we (black folks) always die in films…damn it, I want to make it to the end). People…were…pissed. Nevermind the fact the girl was described as being brown or dark or something (I don’t know the details, don’t judge me.)
OMG. I can’t freaking deal. Does the skin color of the characters have any standing on how you relate to the story being told? Hell to the damn no. It’s not an issue unless you make it an issue. I loved Harry Potter (the movies…haven’t gotten on board with the books yet). I didn’t turn up my nose and say “whattttt? where are all the black people? How in the World can I watch this?” No. I watched it and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Just like I enjoyed Divergent, Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, and Lord of the Rings. It blows me that we can believe in dragons and an invisible platform, but the main character being black is outlandish. To everyone with an issue with it…shut the hell up. If you don’t like it, spend your money, and cast your own actors…in your own productions. Damn.
I saw a void of black faces in the books I read, so guess what? I started writing the stuff I wanted to read. Hermione is black, I’m over the moon excited. Even J.K. Rowling had nothing but positive things to say. So if she’s not mad about it, the rest of you need to get the fuck over it.
Here’s what Rowling had to say:
